How to properly heat up a small frozen rat?

LeeFobes Oct 16, 2003 07:41 PM

I have been feeding live mice up until today, i switched to small rats very easily. I had to kill the rat with a screw driver, didnt seem fair to the rat. So now, im pobably gonna get 50 small rats frozen....that should last me a year @ 1 small rat per week. FYI, my bp is a pig of a female, and eats whenever it sees prey. is this feeding it too much or underfeeding it? i think it weighs around 450-550 grams...it feels around 2lbs, i have no idea what its actually weight is, its around 2.8 feet too.

Firstly, a 500g ball can esily eat 2 weanling rats 50-75g every week. If she'll eat, why not feed her? Secondly, when I defrost my frozen rats, I take them from teh freezer and throw them in a tupperware container, fill it with hot tap water, as hot as you can get it, and leave it for about 10 minutes or so. After 10 minutes, change the water, as it will be room temp. by then. Repeat this process a few times until the rat is mushy on the inside and hot. Feed hot to your snake. Good luck.

Wow, you jumped from adult mice to 100g rats?! That's quite a size difference for a 500g ball. I would suggest a smaller food item, maybe 50-70g or so, I think 100g might be a bit big for a snake that's used to eating adult mice.

This is how I heat up a Frozen Rat.

1. Fill a bowl full of hot water.
2. Put a Frozen Rat into a Ziploc Bag, release as many air as possible and zip it up completely.
3. Submerge the whole Ziploc Bag into the bowl full of hot water. The Rat should be completely thawed out within 5-10 Minutes.
4. Take the Rat out of the Ziploc Bag and feed it to your snake.

Hope this helps.

I buy my rats 110 at a time from Rodent pro.

I then Vac pack then in groups of 12, 6, and 2.

The advantages of Vac packing:
1: The rats last over a year without freezer burn
2: You can throw them right into the hot water to thaw without them getting wet.
3: And during the thaw blood comes out the nose because of the suction inside the bag so there is no slicing the head open.
4: They do seen to thaw a little faster.
