are adult albinos scared of light?

ericmc83 Oct 16, 2003 07:46 PM

I am a bearded dragon owner who is seriously considering getting a leo as well. I have found a gorgeous patternless (which I believe are all albinos, right? this one seems to be), but I read that young albinos are scared of light. Is this true of adults? If so, to what extent are they reluctant to be in light? One more thing...are there any differences in temperment between males and females in leos? Thanks in advance!!! ~Eric M

no, adult albinos aren't afraid of light

right now, my albino leo is lying on top of his cool hide with the day light bulb / basking light on.... even at night, if he climbs up my hand and i let him roam around, i turn my bedroom ceiling light on and it doesn't seem to bother him at all.

have fun with your leo!

That all patternless are not albinos. You can tell by the eyes and regular patterness are usually darker.

Patternless and albino are not the same thing. If you've found a patternless albino, it would likely be very expensive. The last one I saw during the summer WOULD have been $200 IF they were selling it (which they weren't).

I have two albinos, and both are sensitive to light. I just don't have bright lights on the cage--just their dark red light. They still come out, but just don't want bright light shining in their eyes. One of them is almost totally blind, and it still seems to bother her. They are COOL. Albinos are my favorite. I also have one patternless male, but he's got the darker normal leo colored eyes, not the light albino eyes. His body color is grey most of the time.

I'm a beardie owner too. They are vastly different. Leo's are nocturnal, as I'm sure you know, and even tho I hold my beardie more (for hours at a time), the leopards--at least most of mine--seem to be more sociable. They try to get to my hand and climb up my arm--even almost fight with each other to be the first up. It's really sweet. They're easier and cheaper to take care of than beardies, too, don't need a UVB light, eat their own calcium out of a dish usually, poop in one corner. What more could you ask for? (But I wouldn't give my dragon up for anything!!)

for some reason mine doesn't mind the light? i just put the day light basking bulb in for light and to raise the temp in the cage, and he walked over in front of his humid hide, plopped himself down, and just went to sleep... and that happened just now b/c it's early N i hafta get 2 work!

Unless a bright light is the only source of their heat. I do have leos that will sleep out in open daylight, but still, they will go back into hiding if I leave my bedroom lights on for more than 5 minutes at night.
