botfly larvae

steve_z Oct 16, 2003 08:13 PM

Here's the story: I saw these gulf coast box turtle adults for sale and thought it would be a good chance to add onto my breeding colony, so I traded some baby easterns for a few. The turtles were promissed to be healthy and in good shape. I get them in, and one of the turtles is infested with botfly larvae. Today I took the animal to the vet to have them removed, and to my surprise, a total of 30 larvae was taken out of 4 wounds. No thats not a typo, thirty larvae! Thats the most I've ever seen from a single turtle. Whats the moral to this story?: Make sure you see the animal before you buy it. Request pictures, do whatever- But now I have a vet bill that costs more than what the turtle would have.

The worse part of the story is now this trader has some of your babies. The moral of this is not to give your turtles to people you don't know well enough to entrust them to.
