Help with WC black racer temps!

cito Oct 16, 2003 08:18 PM

What i have been doing for my 4.5 foot wild black racer is i had a 100 watt heat lamp on his 20 gallon cage for about 4-5 hours a day, turning it off whenever i felt was a good time. And at night i have nothing on. I was just wondering on some specifics what i should do during the day and night. What watt bulb? How long to have it on? What about night time, same thing?

First off you need a temp gauge in both ends of the cage. Im thinking a 100 watt bulb is too much. I used a human heat pad set on the lowest setting along with a 40 watt bulb during the day. Then at night I would shut off the light. This kept the temps on the warm end around 80-82 and the temps on the cool end around 72-75. Without a temp gauge you cannot accurately guess the temps in the enclosure. Too hot and the snake can die. Too cold and the snake can go off feed or regurge.

Hope this helps
Brian
