For Those Of You Who Have Had Escapees.....

Brock Oct 16, 2003 11:18 PM

Where are some places you have found them? My 1.5 year old female just got out in the last few days (was away for Thanksgiving) and she jumped the table her cage was on and now could be anywhere. On the bright side, her cage is in the basement in my room, so she couldn't have gotten upstairs *phew*.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Also, how long can one survive without water? I will let some crickets loose if I cannot find her in the next 3 days, but supplying water would be a bit more difficult.

Check under anyplace where a gecko could fit under, and anyplace near a heat source. Under the bed, dresser, clothes piles (I dunno, maybe you're dirty... :-D), or over the heat source would be good places to start.

I'd leave some water out for it so it will be OK until you find it. I just found a cresty after about 3 weeks none the worse for wear. I think he was drinking from the dog's dish!

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

The thing I regret doing when I lost my leo was searching for him head-on. I'm sure all the noise and commotion from moving stuff around just frightened him more into hiding.

I bought two dozen large crickets (too big for him to eat, but they're more visible and they chirp) and put them into a couple of clear plastic containers. Then put the containers in two different spots of the room. Next to the container, I kept a clear plastic dish with 20 mealworms and a hide from his tank. Overnight he ate most of the mealworms but didn't go into his hide.

I was relieved to at least know he'd been there, so I concentrated my efforts into that one area. I moved the two containers of crickets, two hides, food, and heating pad all to that one spot. I also covered up the hides to make them look more inviting.

We found him inside one of the hides just a couple days later.

Ah! Sorry, now I feel like an ignorant fool, but I hope you understand I didn't even know your version was also called Thanksgiving. Oh, well, what did you eat?

Same as Americans: Turkey, Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes (with Gravy, ofcourse), cranberries, squash, pumpkin pie.

Although my family has a bit different tradition of going camping on thanksgiving weekend (after that weekend the campgrounds all close down for the winter). So it was a chilly 10 degrees (Celsius) for us to eat thanksgiving dinner around the campfire.

Both ended up in my closet for some reason. O_o
In the same spot. In a crevice between some boxes. It's dark, cavelike, and was pretty warm there =3

Looks for a spot like that I think... somplace they can get to that is dark and cozy

What kind of container did it climb out of? (I didn't think they could get out of aquariums...hopefully my 10 gal will keep it in...)

Andrea_A Oct 18, 2003 01:02 PM

I had one climb out of a 10 gallon tank, even after I moved all hides etc so they didn't touch the sides of the tank. Just fyi ... get some type of screen lid for that aquarium!

Thanks for the heads up. I couldn't buy a lid for my tank (due to the light fixture I mounted in the corner), so I made an "L" shaped lid this weekend out of 1/4" oak baseboard trim and aluminum screen that I bought at Home Depot. Turned out surprisingly well and I like the oak look. Only cost about as much as a standard plastic or metal trimmed lid too, but this way I get oak trim.

If anyone's planning to build their own lid, the easiest way to put it together turned out to be hot glue. No nails, no drilling, and if you screw something up, you can just heat it up and move the joint around. Didn't take long to build either.

First to all the Canadians out there.........did you have a good Thanksgiving??? I had an amazing one. Turkey, corn, turnip, squash, sweet potatoes, pumkin pie mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

And the other thing.......My gecko Dot.....one of the smallest geckos i have can climb......i mean really climb. The tank she is in is 15 inches high and if it wasn't for the screen top she would have been lost a long time ago. Granted she's only climbing the divider separating her side from Abby but still. The divider is covered in a smooth sticky tile so that neither one could see the other and she still managed to climb it. I even moved all of her hides away from that side so she didn't have a *leg up* so to speak and i still caught her climbing over. Never underestimate the power of a gecko LOL when they want something they get it hehehe. I think she was stealing Abby's food. For being such a small gecko she really did intimidate poor Abby (whose alot bigger). Since i started giving her more food (20mealies) i haven't caught her over there......yet.

Are your dividers clear? Did Abby and Dot at least get to know each other by seeing through the divider?

I can just imagine being in Abby's shoes and then suddenly having a neighbor literally drop in. lol

No the divider is solid so they can't see eachother. I had planned on pairing up 2 of the females only to find when i got them that all of the girls were of differing sizes. Thats when i split the tank. I put Dot and Abby there for some extra TLC cause they both had a bad leg at the time (Dot walked on her right front elbow, and Abby's back leg was very bent). I thought it might have been injuries from the bumpy ride home. Turns out some extra calcium is what Abby needed......where as Dot began walking normal after a few days. I don't know if Abby really minded the unexpexted visiter.....she was in her log sleeping both times i found Dot in her side. Dot kept going to the ceramic boot hide, so i just gave it to her and she hasn't been over there since I'm also feeding her more.
