AN AMAZING STORY!!

herb s Oct 17, 2003 10:21 AM

I just thought I would share this amazing story with all you snake lovers. I gave my sister a baby gopher snake I hatched out last year. She told me it got out of the cage one day. She searched and searched the house all day looking for it but no luck (I'm sure some of you know how that goes). Having three dogs, five cats and three birds she thought he was a gonner for sure. Well this happened right before winter last year and we live in Illinois so it gets really cold here. Just the other day my mom heard the kids in the backyard next door screaming "a snake!, a snake!". She ran next door to see what all the noise was about and sure enough there he was in the corner of the garage curled up in a ball and skinny as can be. She took him home and called my sister and told her the good news. The gopher is back in his cage, eating again and happy as can be. Pretty cool huh!

I had a similar experience with a motley cornsnake. But it was only gone a week and found in the kitchen. I put it back in the tank and fed it. Checked all over to make sure it wouldn't get out. The next morning it was gone again. Was I in the dog house. That was the end of my keeping reptiles for a while. That was about 5 years ago and I keep hoping it will show up or at least get some interesting rat snakes in the neighborhood.

What I have learned is don't under estimate your snakes. My sister had him in a tall tank with a crappy lid. You have to have a reptile screen or a secure lid or they will find a way out. Hope yours turns up too someday.
