worried

SittonJ Oct 17, 2003 11:27 AM

Okay so I'm still worried about my new leo (got on Sunday). She doesn't move -ever! I think she may be sick! Last night I was happy because I looked and she was actually in her humid box instead of under the usual hide. But she was sooo still she looked dead. I put my hand in the tank as I've been doing to try and get her used to me and when she didn't even bat and eye or move, I gently touched her - that got her breathing heavy so that I could see it. But other than that nothing - no head turning or anything. What should I do? Temps and everything are ok. I put her in my bedroom so it is not a high traffic area and gets light during the day/dark at night. Still hasn't eaten anything, but is drinking. She pooped the first night I had her so I don't think she's impacted. She's a year old. Is she just scared stiff - literally?

I would take her to a vet (although I'm traditionally kinda paranoid.)
I would think if it was stress, she'd be awake and with a tendency to remain hiding. That's how ours was when she was new to us.
Also, try sprinking powder around and see if she's leaving footprints. That tells you if she's really just sleeping all the time, or only when you're watching her.
Good luck. I hope she perks up.

I'm sorry to hear about your gecko. Was she active when you purchased her? When did you notice her slowing down?

Unless you bought her already sick - I'd still double check all my husbandry - hot spot at 90 - a couple of hides - water dish - food. In my experience, 90% of our problems are husbandry-related.

Does she look grayish - maybe she is having a bad shed and needs some help to get it off. Just guessing . . .

Good luck and keep us updated.

Thanks for your responses. When I got her, she had just been placed in the display cage and was active - she entered with her tail held high up as a defense response and then proceeded to run around with the other geckos in the cage with her. I held her and she wriggled and then calmed - looked fine to me. Had very bright colors. I don't think she looks greyish but she is spending all her time in the humid box. I will check for the footprints tonight. She did have her eyes open - not closed when she wasn't moving. If I pick her up, she still squirms a lot so she does have energy. I just don't understand the hiding all the time and not moving. I've never caught her moving around the cage although she has to have because she drinks from her water bowl. The tank is heated with a UTH and has a hide on both sides and a humid hide. She was kept on sand when I bought her, but as I said she pooped the first night. Can this just be stress?

chances are it is stress. 5 days without food is not too bad. I would suggest that you keep the handling to a minimum and offer her choices for food items. she should start eating soon. I would not start to worry intil next friday.

You can never have just one gecko. Actually it is almost impossible to have two
