Lighting / Bulbs / Thermometer (RED QUAKE)

x1angelbabyx Oct 17, 2003 11:40 AM

hi! thanks for replying - i didn't see your message because our posts got buried

i had a question - if it gets REALLY cloudy in SF and it's rainy-like weather... it's still okay to use that as light for a day/night schedule? sometimes when it rains or we have the ice cold winds (had the ice cold wind the other day while it was sunny), then my room gets colder...so should i stick with the bulb i do have for heating purposes? and yes, i do have a UTH on the warm side of the tank .

since you use the sticky strips and they seem okay, i think i'll stick with it i don't want 2 harm my leo either way by removing it and having his fingers stick or having them chemicals that remove the stickiness make him sick or even worse - die!

hopefully you get this message before it gets piled over

=====ORIGINAL MESSAGE=====
==========================

although my leo's tank is next to the window where the light comes in during the day, the weather in San Francisco ALWAYS changes... one day it could be hot & the next it could be raining. when it's hot, i just leave the blinds open and the light off - and when it's cold, the blinds are closed to keep in some humidity and the light is on... the thing is - my electricity bill went up this month and my mom is blaming it on the lizard. is there any cheap lighting that i can use that keeps the temps between 86F-90F during the day and between 78F-82F at night without using up a lot of the electricity? right now, i have a 75W basking bulb that keeps the temps at 86F-90F during the day and a 60W red bulb that keeps the temps between 78F-82F at night.

Also, I've been reading that the sticky thermometers aren't as accurate, but it came with the tank set-up that I got from a kid that didn't want his leo anymore. If I remove the sticky thermometer from the inside, will the stick stay on the tank? It's kind of low and my leo can reach it - I just don't want his little fingers to get stuck on them. What thermometer do you recommend?

Thanks all!

I think that even when cloudy theres still enough light to let the leos know that its day time.....then again we've had some nasty storms up here where it got very dark. I'm struggling with the lighting issue as well. I picked up the wood for the unit today but i have to support the unit all the way across so putting in one large 8ft flouresent light isn't possible. I only have one plug against that wall and i still have all the rheostats to plug in so i'm at a stand still right now. You can go with a lower wattage bulb to reduce power consumption.

As for the sticky strips......i would much rather have the digital ones......they are much more accurate but like i said, right now i can't afford it, maybe next pay I wish i could win the lottery LOL...... The sticky residue left isn't that bad and can be easily scraped off without chemicals.
