how long till your baby beardie ate???

kailaya Oct 17, 2003 11:50 AM

Just curious how long it took everyone's baby to eat. I received mine on a mainly veggie/pellet diet. Any suggestions? How long is too long?

THanks,

tara

PS- and yes, I'm a sucker, and am falling madly in love with the "wrong" little girl I received. I am probably going to keep her and name her Karma since I do believe things happen for a reason.

When my bearded dragon first arrived, I didn't feed him at all the first day to give her a chance to settle in. However she ate the crickets I offered without hesitation but it was nearly a month before she ate greens regularly.

I personally feel pellets should be offered only as an extra with regular feedings of crickets and greens instead of a stable diet. Others here, however use it all the time with no problems, except a slower growth rate (but they catch up to sibling size/weight by the time they are a year old)

I would offer crickets the first day and see if he will go for them. Offer greens with pellets as well but don't worry if they are untouched for the first couple weeks, just dust your crickets regularly to ensure your dragon is getting all the nutrician he needs.

i have one beardie that will eat them.. in fact she will hold out for the canned ones.. perfering them to the live ones.. mattman may be able to answer this better because i believe he feeds all of his dragons canned crickets.. the only thing i worry about is if the crickets are gutloaded before they are killed. another thing is that it can get exspensive dojo can go through half a can a day..since she is only 4 months old.. i pick out the big ones...so thats about 100 crickets.i don't know what i would do if all my dragons wanted canned crickets.. i would be spending 100s of dollars a month on the canned stuff compared to a lil over 100 a month on crickets and various worms.

My little guy LOVES these. I believe they are gutloaded before they are cooked (they are cooked in the can), so they should be just as nutritious as regular crickets.

The best thing about the can-o-crix is that I can mush up some vegies/fruits/pellets and stick some on the crix and trick my dragon into eating the stuff he usually leaves sitting around.

My adults just go nuts for these canned crickets. I still feed my babies and juvi's the live feeders cause of all they eat. I have to buy them by the 1000s I heard again about feeder crickets at the farms carrying parasites, and all that bad stuff dragons can get from eating sick bugs. I've fed my adults canned crix, and the occasional super/butter worm for the last year and have yet to have a parasites show up in their tests, (knock on wood)of course they all eat zoomed pellets and salads daily as well. I buy the canned crix at reptiledirect.com the more you buy the cheaper they are, and they pretty much are about a buck cheaper then most places to begin with. For young dragons get the red can small crickets for adult dragons the yellow can. If I could I would stop buying live crickets and feed them all the canned ones if I got a fair price to make a switch like that.
