Smirnoff Mites Update....

Heather Oct 17, 2003 11:58 AM

I still can't figure out how He got them..... I gave Him a betadine bath both yesterday and this morning. Right out of the bath, They were still on HIm. He has a few rough patches of skin that I investigated closer. They were all over those patches.... I called the vet and He's going in today. I feel like a terrible Iguana mommy.... Feel like I let him down big time. He's not acting sick at all. He's eatting like always and still all over His house. I just feel terrible. Ugh.... I'll let you know what the vet says....

Why feel like a bad ig mom? Mites can crop up by causes that are not in your control.

Because I didn't catch it sooner. I noticed the Rough spots before and just thought it was a shed. I didn't investigate them sooner. And Now the mites are out of hand.... THat's why I feel like a bad Ig mommy....

Here is a site that explains the various aspects of the mite problem:

Well, Smirnoff Has Red Mites. He's not too bad. They just started it seems.... I was told to Give Him a betadine bath once a week and to completely rip apart His house and clean it (soaking the branches). I knew this (Thanks to you guys) but He did get a Ivomecterin Shot and He's also getting a fecal done (something He was due for anyway). Anyway, Now my parents actually believe me and it'll be a family project tomorrow to tear his house apart. Thanks so much for your help!

One thing the vet did do worried me though.... He Squeezed out Smirnoff's Fem Pores.... Which left raw looking (painful looking also) holes in His thighs.... Was this suppose to be done?? He said they usually shed them out and not to med the holes that they'll fill in in no time.... Maybe it's me but that didn't seem right..... I've never taken either of my Igs to him before. I was told (by him) that He always does herps. He's a self proclaimed exotics Vet. I've taken A few other herps to him (Beardies and uros). Am I nuts or was He not suppose to do that?

I hate to say this but unless the iguana has been completely isolated from your other lizards and you've changed your clothing each time you visited your other lizards after visiting with the iguana...your other lizards may have the mites also. Check them well.

There is one caution I'd like to bring up. Dosing injected Ivermectin is quite tricky for reptiles. I had a friend who had 2 iguanas treated in this manner for pinworms. After the second injection in the series both iguanas went spontaneously blind. The blindness lasted for 9 days before their sight returned. This was blamed on improper dosing.

The evacuating of the femoral pores is something I've never heard of or seen done before. A normally active male iguana will naturally wear these plugs down. Squeezing them out does seem like it would be painful and leave the lizard open to infection.

I hate to be the bearer of such negative words and I do hope your mite treatment is successful. I've had good luck in the past with the use of Provent-a-Mite on enclosures and cage furnishings. Use it as directed and it has proven to be quite effective and safe. Good luck!!

something that worked wonders for me and my snake was NIX diluted. 1bottle to a gallon of water, spray it all over him (not his eyes) and rub it all over on his head everywhere and get every little space you can. it worked great on my snake and it should still kill the mites and mite eggs on your igg. spray down his cage well too, id say do this once every 2 days for a week, then once a week after that for a few weeks.
