Snake/Breeding Info

dasnakeguy Oct 17, 2003 01:11 PM

Can anyone recommend a good book or website that explains the genetics when breeding snakes, different morphs, strians, hets, hypos, etc. The more information the better. Thank you in advance.

I worked in a university genetics lab for 5 years, and I can't recommend any web site for learning genetics. If you need to learn the principles of genetics, go with a text book such as Schaum's Introduction to Genetics. The 4th edition came out a year or so back, but if you really want to save money get a used copy of the 3rd edition (which is the one I got about 5 years ago). I think 3rd editions are available for under $5 now, and they are fine unless you need the latest material on DNA and biochemical genetics.

Both H. B. Bechtel's Reptile and Amphibian Variants: Colors, Patterns and Scales and Michael McEachern's Color Guide to Corn Snakes have useful information. But don't try to learn genetics out of them.

Here are some web sites that have good info about morphs:

www.[bleep].com - corn snakes
www.ballpython.com - ball pythons
www.vpi.com - the Barker's web site; various boids.
www.newenglandreptile.com - New England Reptile Distributors; ball pythons
www.kingsnake.com - boa constrictor morphs page

There are other web pages with good information. Inquire on the specific forum for more information.
