My son and I were in the reptile store for our BD yesterday and he saw some ornate box turtles there.

After doing some research on caring for them, I decided not to buy from them. I would like a turtle that is kept inside a large aquarium (not in water, we have RES). What kind is recommended for a 11-year-old to have? We live in S. Calif. so we can keep them outside some of the year.. thanks

There's not really any land turtle or tortoise that should be kept in an aquarium. A tortoise table or indoor enclosure can be built for smaller tortoises such as Russian, or for box turtles. It's good that you didn't buy that box turtle, as it was likely wild-caught. Most tortoises and box turtles in pet stores are wild-caght, although you can occasionally find a very few Greeks and a few others that are captive bred.
