Basking Light Questions...

lele Oct 17, 2003 04:30 PM

I am sure this has been addressed, but I'll ask anyway. Does it REALLY matter whether I use a "basking" light or just a regular 60W incandescent?

thanks,

lele

As long as you provide UVA/UVB some way (a different light) any lite that produces heat is good.

Lele-

I use 40 and 60w CLEAR regular light bulbs from homedepot for less then $3 per 2 bulbs. If you want to use a ceramic bulb then you will have to get them from a pet shop. Also you can get fluorescent shop lights for $10 a set for a double 4' fixture. Hope this helps!

But the floruesent shop bulbs would not give off UVA/B or produce any heat-- or am i thinking of something else?

Hi-

I mean the Shop light fluorescent light fixtures, not the actual bulbs. Sorry about that I should have made it more clear. But only one UVB bulb is need, but the light fixtures need two bulbs to light up, so you can use one plant bulb and one 5.0 UVB bulb. I am very anal when it comes to lights, so I would use 2 UVB bulbs. It comes from keeping reef tanks, $20 a bulb is nothing compared to $70-400 per bulb. Hope this helps!
