P. Ornata availability and care?

guppygal Oct 17, 2003 04:42 PM

Hello, all -

I've perused this forum and I don't see very many posts on P. Ornata - why is that? I don't know anything about them except that they are supposed to be small and colorful. Are they hard to find? Are they hard to take care of? Or are they just plain boring?

Point me in the right direction - I'd like to learn more about these critters.

thanks!

I heard theyre not very common in the US. The majority of CB ornata often end up with dull coloration than WC's. But i still do see some pop up once in a while,

Thanks for the response -

Do you know of any other small, colorful lizards that might be more common? I'm investigating the possibility of aquiring a lizard to take care of the leftover crickets that outgrow my darts. It would most definitely have its own home.

thanks!

Other phelsuma are readily available. P. Laticauda are pretty common,

I have 1.1.3 P. ornata. They are CB and beautiful. I've only been working with them for a short time, but in the spring we're hoping for some babies.
best,
Justin

Hey there, Justin -

I've seen your posts in the Arrow frogs forum and I thought it was interesting that you're into day geckos as well.

Where did you get your Ornatas? How did you decide to adopt lizards, specifically these? Do you plan on selling the babies? I'm looking for fairly small, colorful lizards that will help keep the cricket population under control once the bugs outgrow my darts. I think the darts' color have me spoiled! I plan to keep them in their own tank and I'm looking forward to putting a new one together.

Let me know, okay?

thanks!

Kristi,
People have mixed P. ornata, P. guimbeaui, and P. klemmeri that I know of with dart frogs. I'd definitely mix P. klemmeri first if I still had frogs. They are very hardy and would lend themselves well to mixing. As always, make sure the requirements of all species mixed are met before doing it. I had been into Phelsuma before dart frogs were readily available, but then they were replaced by frogs. Now, I do research on Dendrobatids, so I no longer keep them. Now I keep my few species of Phelsuma and see the frogs in the wild. They will do well with cricket control as well as eating stray flies.
Best,
Justin
