You want to provide a gradient temp in the cage. The height of your cage is short, so make sure the basking site is the hottest part in the cage and as you move down the cage the temps get cooler. I use a digital temp gun to check these types of things. If you only have one chameleon you may not see a need to invest $50 in one. So get a good digital thermometer/humidity gauge to keep track of the temps, and humidity. The analog thermometers are not accurate enough. Adjust your temps by one of two things. 1. Move the basking bulb off (away) from the cage until you get the temps you are looking for. 2. Change the wattage of the bulb either up or down in size. I don't buy the fancy basking bulbs from pet shops, clear light bulbs from home improvement stores work fine for a fraction of the cost. Hope this helps!
