Light and heat for tokay

buggsteer Oct 17, 2003 11:52 PM

Hi, I have a coulpe of questions tat I cant figure out. I have two Tokay Geckos with a 110 watt light over there water bowl, the pet store owner told me that would be plenty for them heat wise and humidity wise. Is that true? They are in a 55 gallon aquarium for now. Should I mist them at all? Should I get a bright light for during the day and a dark for at night, right know I have a incandescent black light(110 watts) only. How warm should it be in the cage?

Yes you should mist, Tokays generally wont drink from a water bowel they will drink from the sides of the Viv, leaves or what not after misting. I mist at dusk and in the early morning and keep a pot of water under the heat source which gives me a constant 60% humidity and a little higher right after misting. I use a red 100 watt bulb 24/7 which creates a good heat variant for them in my Viv. You really dont need anything more than 90 f. Im not sure how tall your tank is but a 110 watt may be a little much if its not at least 3 feet or close to it. The only reason you would need a day light is if you have plants or there is no window in the room to give them a day night cycle. Hope this helps.

Should I hve a light on each side of the tank?

I would recommend trying to keep one side cooler than the other. This way the tokay can chose its temperature. Chances are, the reason the staff member recommended a basking light over a water dish is to evaporate the water and to raise humidity, not for actual drinking water. Dakman is right, you want to mist the sides so they can drink. Mine drinks from the bowl occasionally but it seems only after he sees me pouring the water or something hits the water and ripples it.

You want to keep your heat souce to one side of the tank. This will allow for a heat gradient not only from one side to the other but directly under your basking light will be hotter than half way down and alway the way down. The Tokays will move around to where they feel comfortable. If you use another light for like day/night cycle on a timer just put it high enough over the tank to not effect temp. I use a uv light on a timer that sits 2ft above the top of the tank.

Man, a 110 incondescent bulb? That's very hot. A tokay is perfectly comfortable with 85-90 degree temps. I use an under the tank heater so she can adjust her temperature. In winter I use a 40 watt "night time" bulb on the top as well as the under the tank heater.

I use bed-a-beast and keep it barely moist.

My tokay learned how to drink out of a water bowel but most do not and require daily misting to lick the dew.
