crocodile skink questions

Mothi Oct 18, 2003 01:21 AM

I have been thinking of getting tribs for almost a year now. I have some money I am willing to spend for a pair, but want to make triple sure that I can provide it what it needs and it suits what I want. I have read two online care sheets.

http://www.vmsherp.com/CarePages/CareTribs.htm
http://www.tribolonotus.bravepages.com/Health&Care.htm

So far I understand they need high humidity and UV lights. But they are nocturnal right? I read they need a warm spot, but what is optimal temps on warm side? One said 82F and the other said less than 90F. I read temp should not go below 65-70F.

I was planning on using bed-a-beast substrate and cypress mulch. Anything better or is this okay?

I can feed it crickets, roaches, mealworms, waxworms, etc. How often do I use calcium dust?

One sheet said that a 10-gallon is perfect for a pair. This sounds a bit crammed. 20-gallon okay for 2? What is recommended cage size per skink?

I think that pretty much covers my questions. I am just waiting to see how much shipping would cost to weigh total cost of 2 tribs and supplies to fix up a cage for them. Any tips and pointers are appreciated. Thanks.

I forgot to ask a few things.

Are there any other good forums to visit dedicated to skinks?

Are there any magazines with articles published on Tribs?

Are there any good books that talk about Tribs?

Anyone want to share a photo of their cage set-up?

Thanks.

I have had my girl for almost 8 months and she is doing so well i think i can answer your questions.
Croc Skinks are crepuscular. They are active early morning and late afternoon. In the wild they hide (siesta)during the hottest hours of the day.So they do need UVB lamps or to be put outdoors in the sun for at least 30 min every day. But careful with the temp!!Croc skinks prefer cloudy and humid days, not very hot or dry.
I keep my girl indoors, in a 1F and a half cage placed on the top of a closet, far away from any lamp. The cage temp is the room temp which varies from 78 to 84.When the temp is higher my girl doesnt seem happy!

She only eats mealworms! Gut loaded mealworms. I dont put any substrate in her cage.I tried to put soil but she did a mess! She started to digg and to throw soil inside her water bowl and the soil started to mould and i was afraid of the mould's toxins so i threw the soil in the garbage! Now she only has a small bowl of soil where she likes to poop inside!
Her cage has lots of fake plants, hiding places, and a huge bowl of water where she spends half of the day.She likes to sleep in the water bowl too!Besides the water bowl she loves a wet sponge just like geckos!
When she arrived home she was very shy. Then i started to take her everyday to put in the sun and that makes her to become more friendly! Now, when she wants to go out she climbs the highest place in her cage to be seen and keep staring at me!Staring and staring until i open the cage and try to pick her up.She even lifts her back to be picked up!But i must be careful not to forget her outdoors because where i live is too hot and if i forget her she will die soon under a 100F sun!
