microfauna..

nasr_36 Oct 18, 2003 09:56 AM

(i think thats the right word)

In my leaf litter, i see quite a variety of inverts in the tank. Springtails, wild fruit flies, white worms, aphids, and some others i dont know. I rarely have to do any cleaning, and my frogs cant stop running around chasing everything. Sometimes i even see them chase something microscopic...or very very hard to see things.

My question is, will this diversity of insects harm my frogs in any way? Anyone have a list of safe/harmful bugs used in vivariums? Do i have to worry about fungi, or bacteria coming my way? Or is that only part of the mini ecosystem?

Thanks for the help,

M.N

Hi,
I have lots of stuff like that in my tanks, i don't worry because it helps keep the tank clean and it also gives the frogs some extra chow. Even my big old tincs will eat springtails i can barely see.
just my two cents

It sounds like a nice problem to have! How did you get so much microfauna, I'd like to have the same thing in my viv.

Just be careful of two main things. Don't let any frogs near ladybugs or fireflies. Ladybugs can be problems some times because some herps can't deal with their toxins, but fireflies will kill any herp faster than you believe. If and when you do field sweeps for insects, beware of these two types and you should be fine.
