little frog living in my backyard

hal Oct 18, 2003 12:20 PM

hi...don't know much about frogs but there is a green frog living outdoors in my basement window well..he is about 2 inches long...been there most of the summer. He seems ok. Winter is a few weeks away (I live in Ontario Canada) - my house is very far away from any creeks or streams. Not sure how the little guy (or gal) got to my house...or if I should do anything...leave him where he is or move him to my garden which is large, has trees and lots of mud.

There are a lot of a birds using my back yard as well as the occasional skunk and racoon, squirrels, etc.

Any advice on what I should do to help the little guy, if anything, would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Hal

Hello Hal,
Hey I live in Ontario too!

Ok, a little conused by your description. Is this frog actually a green frog(a species), or are you just saying the color of the frog?

Poor little froggy, not trying to be mean, but it would have been nice if you would have let him out of your window well. He's only living there cause he accidentally fell in. The poor thing was without water to soak in for a very long time!!!!

If you would like to do a good deed for the day, I would take him and find a nice little creek to drop him off in. Frogs need to bury in mud, so your window well(which I'm assuming has stones covering the bottom?)is not ideal AT ALL! Your garden most likely is not that great aswell, because it is my idea that they burry in mud in water, made from tunnels of turtles.

Please take him to a creek. So he can bury himself on time in the mud to brumate(pretty much the amphibian/reptile word to hibernate).

Goodluck with your froggy friend,
Herpfood

thanks for your email...yes..it's green coloured..don't know about the species.

I thought he would have been able to jump out of that.

Anyway, I will take him down to a creek as soon as posssible.

thanks.
Hal
