Bornean Tomistoma

The false gharial or tomistoma (Tomistoma schlegelii). I photographed this magnificant animal on the island of Borneo.

Was this picture taken of a wild one?

No, this animal was in semi-wild conditions. In many hectares of fenced in natural habitat to promote breeding so offspring can easily be collected. In Malaysian Borneo this species is extremely hard to see in the truely wild state. A friend of mine worked as a herpetologist in Malaysian Borneo for 25 years and never once saw a wild tomistoma. However, he did find and describe a nest, which had not been done yet. I believe the article is in the J. of Herpetology, although I could be wrong.
