Another what kind of snake ?

procharged50 Oct 18, 2003 04:07 PM

I was throwing some boxes into the back of my truck when I came across a snake about 12 to 15 inches long. Its gray with black diamond to square shaped spots. It has a black band that starts before the eyes then runs toward the nose has it crosses the snout. It was kinda chilly when i found him/her so it was kind of sluggish. I took it into the house to square my wife and after it warmed up it would hiss and try to strike my finger if i waved it in front of its face. I decided to keep it so i put it into a small plastic case so i could find an aquairium to keep it in when i noticed it woud shake its tail and make a rattling sound when it was aqitated. I cant see a rattle but i thought baby rattlesnakes werent born with them. Anyways, does anyone know what it is?

Without knowing where you & the snake are from, no. Can't tell you.
Waving your finger in front of a snake whose identity is unknown is one way to get oneself on the Darwin Awards List.

Give us a little more info, & I'm sure we'll figure this out. There are quite a few non-venomous snakes that will rattle the tail when agitated, as well as several venomous snakes other than rattlesnakes.

Yes it was really stupid of me to do that but at the time I didn`t think it was poisinous. I think I will take it up to a pet store and see what they say. Thank for your help. Also I live just north of Austin in Texas.
