Ontogentic change in Yellow Tail Cribo's

Keith Hillson Oct 18, 2003 04:52 PM

I know there hasnt been a ton of YT's raised from juveniles but a few questions.

1. Do juveniles with really yellow tails grow into more fantastic adults ?

2. Can juveniles with very average tails grow into fantastic adults ?

3. At what age do the tails really start to take on color ?

4. Some days mine has a yellower tail than others, why ?

Thanks for any help.

Regards,

Keith

Keith,

Your corais' tail is yellower on some days than others?? Hmmm...I don't keep corais, but I would love to hear from others who keep them.

Would it be possible for you to get some daily pics of your guy so we could see exactly what you mean.

I have 02 YT's here that I've raised from babies and they are much different looking now than when they were younger.
I also have some of the siblings from the clutch that your snake came from and I agrree that some days the tails don't look as bright, but it always seems to be about a couple of weeks before they are getting ready to shed.
I'll send you some old pics of my 02 snakes from Phil so you can see their color changes. maybe you can post them here for others to see.
They generally do get better looking with age.

Anthony

Its a subtle change not like its yellow one day and the nezt its gray but the snake will look darker sometimes then others. When he is lighter his tail seems brighter. Maybe its my light ??? Or mine has anole genetics in it !!!! Damn hybrids.

I have never kept YT, but I have had snakes that changed color.

I had a Colombian Rainbowboa (E.c.maurus) whose sides and back were usually brown (basically one solid color) but occasionally would be pale gray/brown instead, providing a marked contrast to the back. This color change had nothing to do with the shed cycle or the lighting in the room. I think it was more likely to be gray-sided at night.

I have also had African Housesnakes that went from dark olive green to a very light shade of green, again with no correlation to shed cycle or lighting.

My Y/T's pretty much stay the same color all the time. They do get a little duller looking, of course, when it gets to shedding time.

I have always wondered this also. If you buy YT babies, aside from seeing the color of the parents, what marker do you use to determine if they will become as yellow as the adults? And how much variability in coloration are in any given clutch? I have heard that ones from good parents and good bloodlines will turn out good, but I wonder how much of this is actually true. Educate me guys, Im still learning about YT's and need the info for future(Long term) purchases.

*cheers*
