Mixing species

WaGuy82 Oct 18, 2003 06:57 PM

Hi

I have a pair of juvenile crested geckos and a very large vivarium that houses them. It's 24x18x36. I'm pretty sure of the answer, but I thought I'd ask just to make sure. Can I add other animals to the set-up? More specifically, I'm looking at captive bred red-eyed tree frogs or a pygmy chameleons. I'm looking for something striking for display purposes since it doesn't looke like there's any actual animals inside.

I would not mix.

If you do decide to mix..dont mix chams with anything. Chams are very solitary creatures. They can stress very easily and die. They are also day time creatures. Anything moving around at night will cause them to not sleep.

If you were to mix animals in a setup - how would you know if they are all getting their fair share?

I know it is not what you want to hear, but maybe just buy a different cage? They are pretty cheap now-days.

Actually, I just want to hear the truth. So deinitely no on the chameleon. The cage I had custom made and everything in it is live. It was pretty much 2 months in the making. I just want a thriving micro-habitat. I also handfeed the crested geckos every other days. Quite honestly, I have enough material left over to make a second cage, however, I currently have a sulcata tortoise, a pair of prehensile tailed skinks, several bearded dragons, and my favorite, seahorses. I also, have a trio of chinchillas so room is somewhat an issue.

If it's not possible, no big deal, I could just add a couple more juvenile crested geckos and hopefully end up with a trio or so. I can play around until I get the right sex ratio.

You should get the new Rhac book (you can order it from giantgeckos.com), because they make a compelling argument for mixing some species in a vivarium setting. I can't recall all the details, but the authors of this book have done it quite successfully, and even take a few shots at those of us who discourage mixing species.

It makes for good, thought-provoking reading. . . .

Monte,
Well as long as they do not recommend mixing leachies or aurics with other species…lol. Mixing is def something that can be done and I have myself on occasions with no problems (not with Rhacs). However it has to be done correctly with the animals having plenty of room and similar requirements, which doesn’t always happen unfortunately, so I usually suggest against it. But anyway thanks for the tip on the book, I hope to pick up a copy at the next show .

. . . there's a picture in the Rhac book with - I think - a leachie snarfing down on a smaller relative - right between it's lips!!

I'll have to read that section again - but they have a pretty interesting section on it - they even get a tad huffy about the whole topic - LOL.

Monte,
I think you might be refering to mixing pink-tongue skinks and smaller rhacs like cresteds. I know de Vosjoli has had success with this and even refers to them as a good companion animal for smaller Rhacs...lol. So to the original poster, I would look into that species. You can start at giantgeckos.com

giantgeckos.com insists that pink toungue skinks do very well with rhacs and make wonderful pets. Check it out on there availability page.
