WHy can't you find bearded dragons? They are available in most areas, though most of the colour morphs may sell for more than $100 but should be able to find a normal phase for alot less. Most reptile shows should have them.

Other than bearded dragons, a crested gecko would fit in a 20 gal tank fine and are pretty good with handling. They are mostly noctorunal so you would have time to see it after school and maybe even before. However crested geckos don't get 12" though...typically around 10" in size but are darn cute.

Fat tailed geckos could be another option...I don't think they get much bigger than a leo, but can't say for sure as I am not familier with them.

Other lizards Ihave seen that are around 1-2' in size is the plated lizard. No clue on their care requirements though.

OK, in your price range, a blue-tongued skink is out. For the amount of care you want to give, and the price you probably AREN'T willing to spend on up-keep and caging, a Savannah monitor is NOT for you. Plus, the Savannah monitors for sale are wild-caught.

A bearded dragon or leopard/fat-tailed gecko sound about what you're describing, and possibly some of the smaller species of plated lizards. But, remember that a dragon or plated will need a 55 gallon as a minimum. Baby dragons are often for sale for less than $100 at a reptile show. If you can find a captive bred Schneider's skink, that might be OK.

For your second species, you might consider a Tokay gecko - not to be handled, and will need at least a 20 gallon tank. I don't know if you can find them captive bred, though.

my mom doesnt like bearded dragons, thats why. I just didnt want an animal that would cost $400 then having to go get supplies, matience isnt too much of a big finacial factor. I have always loved iguanas, so has my mom, ive taken care of one when my friend was on vacation. I will also be building a custom cage. I will be getting a baby, so i would contribute my time and effort into raising and taming the lizard, that means that wild-caught isnt AS big as a factor. It doesnt have to be insectovore anymore. I do not want a Urmostyx either, Thanks!

Why doesn't your mom like bearded dragons? They are very calm lizards, handle easily, don't get too big.

Don't forget with an iguana, you also have to include the cost of a yearly vet visit - x-rays and blood work are recommended each year and cost about $150 per visit - the UVB bulbs, and the fact that you'll be making a fresh salad each day. Also, why get a baby? If you can build a custom enclosure, why not adopt? Of course, many places still have babies for adoption, if you look around.

Also, the wild caught issue isn't as much for you, it's FOR THE LIZARD and the inhumane treatment that befalls wild-caught reptiles during capture and transport to a warehouse and then a pet store.

Since someone else just posted about collared lizards, those might be in the size, price range, and managability that you described.
