First Time to Reptile Show Today

Passport Oct 18, 2003 07:37 PM

Went to Slidell, LA to see my first Reptile show. What fun. I've never seen so many snakes in one place before. Many that I have only seen in pictures. I came home with two new Kingsnanes. One is a 9yr-old and HUGH lavender Brooksi. I couldn't leave him at the show. He is 6ft long and thick as can be. He is baby tame and beautiful. The other is a hatchling speckled Kingsnake. Just too cute. So I guess I'll be visiting this forum more now. The Brooksi is so large I have to set him up in a 50gal reptile aquarium. And I am wondering if this species likes to climb at all. He is on aspen now but would cypress be better? And one more.....can I expect to see him cruising his tank? Or will he take to his hide most of the time. Thanks for any answers or suggestions.

I just got a huge lavender brooksi too. Impressive animals. All my kings stay hidden most of the time. I consider a hidden snake to be a happy snake. He may come out to cruise for food, get a drink, to look for a mate in the spring, or to poop or shed but that's about it. In my experience, brooksi are the most naturally calm (tame) snake out there. I've never even had a hatchling musk on me. Enjoy!
I've been thinking about getting into the speckled kings. Let me know what you think of yours.

Brooksi are great...I have kept many (my collection is not complete without at least one) over the last $$#@$#$#%$ years (darn I'm getting old!!) They do climb on occasion but are more fossorial than anything. They do like to see what's going on so they will come out often enough. Bedding doesn't matter. They are very hardy and seem to like handling, or at least tollerate it very well.
