Superworms

has anyone ever been able to breed these guys? my geckos love them most of all. When i recieved my order the other day a beetle was in there, it looked just like the mealworm beetle tho, i was thinking they would be larger so i tossed it in with my breeding mealworms. So has anyone bred these guys and any advice??? i would love to save the $$ that i spend on buying these guys, they are fairly expensive compared to mealies.
Just curious, any help given, THANK YOU!!!

Hi Lauren,

Supers aren’t too hard to breed. The process is just like breeding mealworms, with one exception. You need to isolate the large superworms from each other if you want them to go into the pupa stage. I have read that some people use film canisters, but I have had good luck with small clear containers also. When I get pizza, they give me parmesan cheese and red peppers in small one ounce containers that have lids. I just wash them out, and put one super in each container. Within a week or so they turn into ‘aliens’. You should be able to handle it from there if you are familiar with mealworm breeding. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.

I am going to pick up some Superworms for my Leos to give them a try. My beardies used to love them, but I could never keep them in the bowls, they'd climb out and be crawling around the tank. I plan to hand feed the superworms to my Leos, or at least only put one in at a time and stand there till they eat it, and take it out if they don't, I'm afraid such a large worm crawling around could cause stress. If you go to Wormman.com they have Superworm Breeding Kits available now. Or you could do what Dave suggested and just separate out some worms in whatever containers you have around. The beetles do need more moisture than mealies, and will eat each other if they do not have enough. Keep an eye on the one you stuck in you mealie colony to be sure he's not munching away at your mealie beetles. I have a mealie colonie and have seen superworm beetles, they were much larger than my mealie beetles, so perhaps your superworm beetle is still young.
