Food Question

BG007 Oct 18, 2003 10:18 PM

I am attempting to get my gecko to eat out of a dish (with his mealworms). What do most of you use to keep the worms in during the day so that your geckos may peruse at their leisure? I have found that meal worms are fairly adept at climbing out of the fake rock food bowls, made by ExoTerra for example. I'm currently using a smaller ceramic bowl, but I'm afraid he can't see them in there and won't know to eat out of it. Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks,
B

I use the ceramic dishes; most of the mealworms can’t climb out on their own. It seems like the geckos learn where they can expect to find food, even if the mealies aren’t visible from ground level.
If the ceramic dish doesn’t seem to be working for your gecko, you might try a glass dish. A cigarette ashtray or candleholder would be your best bet. Good luck!

ceramic is good... anything with even the slightest rough side or ledge will help the worms to have traction and aid them in getting out. If youre worried about the leo not being able to see the worms, ive seen petri dishes suggested. You can get them online, and they are very inexpensive.

i use a tall feeding bowl with smooth sides. it's shaped like a wooden stump with a snake-like branch on the side... the mealies can't climb up because it's too smooth. i've only had one mealie escape, but it's because he was long enough to stand from the bottom to the top of the dish (huge mealie!). i attached a picture below!
