Snail raising as food for turtles

Aquarius May 28, 2003 05:56 PM

Hi

Wasnt too sure where to put this post.....but I wanted to raise snails, as food for my three turtles (not just snails). Anyways, I live just outside Toronto, and there is a ravine nearby, with a stream flowing through it. There is also a railroad tract nearby, this is not a creek, but one of those sewer types, you know what i mean. Every Spring and Summer our backyard is full of these black and yellow snails (the two colors are swirled). What type of snails are these? Can I use them to feed my turtles, not the ones I find, but their offspring? I am a little worried about contaminents, being the area, but the offspring should be okay..right? These snails are fairly large, and they will be raised in a separate tank.

Thanks

Yes the off spring will be fine from pesticides ect. Im sure turtles chomp on them all the time if there are as many as you explained earlier. It sounds like a good idea and could end up saving you some good money.

Thank You.....and yes there are lots, after a good storm, you end up stepping on them sometimes and they show up everywhere in the area
