HELP!!!!!!! ASAP!!! (Eggs hatching)

RalphSnakeMan Oct 19, 2003 10:18 AM

After 71 days and 14 dead eggs, the five eggs that I have left are finally hatching, this is my question, one of the babies just has his head out now and his eyes are closed, I'm not sure if he is breathing or not, should i help him out of the egg, or leave him be??? HELP QUICK!!! Also how motile should these babys be, the one that hatched out already isn't moving around much, hes kinda just sitting there...is this normal behavior or what?

Thanks for your time and patience,
Ralph

My babies poked their heads out and sat there for over 12 hours in some cases. I too thought my babies were dead because they weren't breathing, but they are ok, really
My first baby that hatched did so very slowly, took literally hours after he decided to come out, then he sat around for a few hours. The second popped out of the egg, jumped out of the incubator and tore all the way across the living room before I could grab her! The third just had her head out when i went to bed and by the am was just as crazy as the second, and the first was too. Once mine were all out and rested, they were little nutballs. Be patient, it took my second clutch three days to hatch out, I wouldn't mess with them until they are out of the egg and running around.

Hey Dogstar,

Thanks for the response!! Looks like I will just leave them alone then!!!

More questions for you/other members

How long before I should offer them water?
What should I use as a water dish? (Are bottle caps okay?)
How long before I offer them crickets?
What should I offer them as far as vegetables, is lettuce and carrots okay like i feed my other beardies?
Lastly what size crickes should i offer them, 1/4 inch?

Thanks in advance for any responses
Ralph

P.S. I know I sound like I don't know anything but I have had quite a few reptiles in my dad however this is my first breeding success and I dont want to lose any babies!

for them to pip through the egg and then rest for several hours sometimes before emerging and then to rest again for several more.

Congrats I am glad for you that some are hatching, sounds like you had a rough time with the eggs. Be prepared, most will not eat for a few days, they have pleanty of reserve from the yolk in them still.

Like the other's have already said... Leave them alone. I have some eggs that pip and hatch within an hour and some that lay there and wait for almost an entire day.
Some come out and run around, others need a nice long nap.

Good luck with the babies
