Panacur question for Colchicine or anyone else

elliott Oct 19, 2003 10:42 AM

Colchicine,
In a previous post you mentioned Panacur for parasites, I was just wondering if you knew the guidelines for dosage, amount and duration. If there were any Contradictions for the use of this medication.
Thanks in advance,
Elliott

Ideally, you would test the feces of the frog in question for parasites and treat any parasites according to what is known to effectively eliminate them. However, panacure is safe enough for a prophylactic treatment which is quite common. Common dosages are 100 mg/kg, but panacure has been effective at lower dosages of 25 mg/kg. Treatment should occur two weeks apart from each other with a possible third treatment determined by the presence of parasites. Sometimes only one treatment is necessary. I am not aware of any contraindications of panacure specifically in Amphibians. The problem is administering the treatment and restraining the amphibian. This should only be done while wearing wet rubber gloves, and I have even used NovAqua to lubricate the gloves.

Of course I have to say that you should always consult a veterinarian before any treatment. I highly recommend going to the health forum on a regular basis as there are many great discussions on parasites. Pay close attention to the posts by oldherper, although he is not a vet he is extremely knowledgeable about parasites.
