Firebellys and Bullfrogs

redeye48 Oct 19, 2003 11:50 AM

I have had two Oriental firebellys in a 20 gallon 2/3 water, 1/3 land tank for over a year. All has been going very well (there is also a newt and a few catfish in the tank as well). My daughter brought home a small sized American bullfrog and wants to add to tank. Am I nuts to try and mix? I understand bullfrogs need there space and can be omnivourus, however these guys are all about the same size and there is still plenty of empty corners in the tank.

Hey,
I wouldn't mix them for two main reasons:
1. Bullfrogs are pigs and will try to eat anything that fits in their mouth.
2. FBT have toxins in/on their skin, if your bullfrog was to eat an FBT it may die from the toxins, or it could become very sick just by being in a tank exposed to FBT.

Its never a good idea to mix species of any kind. In your case its definitely not a good idea.

Good luck!

I have realized that it is not a Bullfrog, but a PigFrog. I intend keeping them together for only a few weeks until I can fix up another seperate tank. Thanks for the help

Ditto on what Kristen says. Never mix because you care about your animals.

There is no compromise when keeping amphibians with firebelly toads. Separate them immediately and keep them separated!

I would go out and buy a cheap container for the pig frog rather than put it with the fbt. I have had a bronze frg die from merely licking a fbt while trying to get a cricket. If you wanted to go a cheap route, you could even buy a large critter keeper or rubbermaid container for a temporary home, and return it to the store after you use it! But please don't combine the two species!

I wouldn't mix them, even if it were for a couple days! Even if you were adding a new FB to the tank, you'd want a quarentine period so that you can observe the new frog and be sure that it isn't ill. Not to mention that adding a wild caught frog, you risk introducing parasites to the toads and toxins to the pigfrog
