Substrate question...

philg Oct 19, 2003 01:02 PM

Right now I have my beardie on sand. I'm trying to do away with sand with all my animals, and have since switched over to carpet with most of my geckos. My question is, is there any carpet I can buy and cut to size, or is the stuff you buy in pet stores actually different from something I can buy at home depot?? I'm having a hard time paying $7.00 for a small peice of carpet when I know theres got to be a cheaper way....

I beleive any indoor/outdoor carpet is fine..just make sure there are no unraveling edges.

However as an alternative to carpet or sand, I use plastic table cloth (mattman uses non slip shelf liner which is also very good) instead. The plastic tablecloth is easier to spot clean and fairly cheap. (I paid around $18 CDN for a 3'x100' roll). You just cut it to size, use a bit of scotch tape to fix it in place on the edges (makes it easier to clean, unless you have alot of furnature to hold it down). When he poos, use paper towel to scoop up the poo and another wet towel with mild anti-bacteria soap to wash off the spot, thnen a third dry paper towel to dry off the spot. Once a month I change the tablecloth and wash underneath (good ideal to use a paper towel underneath to absorb any leakage). At the same time I wash all the furnature and give my beardie a soak. I find this is alot easier than just paper towels.
