Some input on setting up a vivarium . . .

powergeckos Oct 19, 2003 02:46 PM

. . . OK, my cresteds are now officially too cool to keep them in Rubbermade or those dinky Acrylic boxes. I'm going to do a 20 High for my living room - then do my huge 30 in the lobby of my campus church (the 20 high is the practice one!!). I need some input.

Have any of you ever utilized the back glass of your aquarium to glue branches and background, to give your rhacs additional jumping perches? (I really like the idea from the Rhac book - don't use more than 50% plants, so they can do some jumping from branch to branch. )

I'm looking at playing around with the back glass - which I feel is under-ultilized. Any thoughts or comment?

Monte,
Maybe you can cover the back glass in cork, and push branches through the cork bark for a more natural looking setting than glued branches?

Monte,
Just use a hot glue gun to adhere some branches from side to side of the cage, almost like perches in a bird cage. I used to do it all the time with my chams and worked great. Be sure to post pics of those cages when you’re done =).

You could use cork for the backing and drill a hole through the cork bark and adhere the branches to that before you mount it to the glass. Here's a picture of my new set-up. The resurrection ferns are still somewhat dormant, so it could potentially be better.

I was thinking of putting this in..but the cresteds can be quite messy.

How do you keep the corkbark clean? I would love to do it though. I use it for my dart frogs, but seem to have a tough time thinking the rhacs will allow me to keep the cork sanitary.

thanks all

Adam,
You don’t keep it clean….lol. Crested geckos, well all rhacs, can be extremely messy. They are like little monkeys and just fling the stuff everywhere. That’s why I keep my cages as SIMPLE as possible. If they were elaborate it would take me way to long to clean all of them. Of course if you only have one or two it is no big deal, if that’s the case go nuts .
