I like to keep the setup very simple for hatchling to yearling sized muds. I use 2 1/2 gallon aquariums with a piece of driftwood set at an angle. This allows the turtle to hide under it and crawl out of the water too. Just be sure the turtle can't get trapped under it. I also use plastic (Tupperware type) sweater boxes as they are very simple to clean and sterilize.

But.....you can also make a very interesting aquatic vivarium with live plants and a low power (sponge) filter system for small mud/musk turtles. Just make sure the water depth is not too deep or there is an easy way for the turtle to climb out of the water. They don't usually bask much but they do like hang out at the surface in the plants if they are available.

You might also experiment with feeding in a seperate container to help keep the living quarters clean.
