Fattening up a thin gecko?

raistlyne Feb 08, 2003 03:39 PM

I've had four leopard geckos in an enclosure for nearly a year now. Recently I have noticed that one of my girls has been loosing weight and her tail is thinning up. At this point I am planning on buying another cage and moving her to see if that will help, but I would appreciate other imput. All my geckos primarily eat crickets and mealies gutloaded and dusted, but I would like some ideas on what types of food are best offered to adult geckos to facilitate weight gain. Thanks!

You definately need to get her into an enclosure by herself... the other females may be bullying her out of food. The best food item that I have used for putting weight back on geckos are superworms, no doubt about it.

Good luck with her, assuming she has no internal parasites, she should make a speedy recovery if housed individually.

What if your leo won't eat them readily? i don't like the whole idea of "don't give them crickets, when they are hungry they will eat them" method. There any other methods?

That will fatten her up for sure! But if she's a little sick, maybe its best to just give her one. It might be hard on her to digest and pass 2 at once.

Waxies and Pinkies will fatten her up. Just use in moderation. Many people might not agree, but I give those of mine that will take them , pinkies one day one week and wax worms one day the next week when they begin breeding and start laying. This builds up their fat reserve. In a situation like yours I'd separate the female and give her waxies or pinkies once a week and continue her regular feeding regimen. Hopefully she'll be fat and back to normal in no time.

Good Luck,
Bruce N

how old should she be before i try a pinkie w/ her? my girl is about 10 months and is really starting to fill out nicely. she likes wax worms but i would like to treat her to a pinkie now and then. thanks.
ps. i'll post a pic of her after this next shed.

It's my guess that at 10 months old your gecko is probably at least around 40 grams. I start feeding mine day old pinks at about 25 grams. Day old pinkies are not usually much bigger than an adult cricket. She should be plenty big.

Good Luck,

Thanks for the advise. I have Titania in her own cage now, and she already seems happier. She comes out more often than she did before, at least. I've begun adding waxworms to her diet, though I don't think she knows what to make of them, and am looking around for small pinkies that I think would be good given her size.

Thanks!
