Whats the Anole's fascination with clinging to the top of the screen ?

Vel Oct 19, 2003 03:59 PM

I did a new cage setup today with a screen lid...UVA B bulb up top along with a 50 watt heater bulb...Temp is at 80. And these Anoles just can't help themselevs but to cling to the top of the screen and hang out under the UV light. The male is also seemingly trying to edge his way under the screen and try and pop out the top-front of the tank, which obviously, will never happen. The female isn't as adventurous..She eventually followed suit and jumped from the log onto the the lid but only after lots of pondering on her part.

All anoles have different behaviors. Some likes to hang out on leaves, on glass, or hanging on screen. My anoles mostly hang out on the glass or on high branches. They don't wander on the screen, and it's rare to seem them do it. Now, yours may be liking it just because it's their behavior. The behaviors vary, and they're virtually countless. Watch your anoles carefully. There were some reports of anoles attempting to escape while hanging upside down on screen, and rubbing their nose raw.

Not only that, but they can get flap tail when clinging upside down all day, or on the glass most of the time. You might want to put lots of branches/plants for the anole to perch on. I personally have several dry bamboo pices siliconed to both sides of the tank, and my anole never did it again...

For those of you who dont know what flap tail is, its when theyre tail (geckos, and others aswell) gets permenantly jerked to the side due to the force of gravity. This doesnt effect the health of the anole, but it doesnt look very pleasent either...

This might be reversed if caught early enough though.
