Ringneck snake care

nha Oct 19, 2003 04:05 PM

We have an unexpected addition to our snake collection - a ringneck snake appeared in our basement laundry area. We're in northern MA and I figure he's coming in for the winter. I did capture him (several times - he escaped twice and showed up again near the washing machine) and is living in a 10 gallon cage with a secure mesh top. I'm using commercial bedding (KayTee SoftSorbent litter) and a shallow bowl of water. The snake is small and thin, maybe 6" long.

I am looking for feeding and care suggestions. I am reluctant to release the snake outdoors (35F today) and releasing it in the basement is not acceptable to otherwise understanding spouse. I have put a small spider and a soft bodied insect in the cage. I tried very small guppy fry. So far I don't think the snake has eaten in the 3 days we've had him in captivity.

Thanks in advance,

Nicholas

Go to the small terrestrial snake forum and just look. There have been like 6 or 7 posts about ringneck care there lately. You should find the answer there, but if not, you can email at snakeguy88@aol.com with any additional questions and I will answer them as quickly as possible. Andy

ringnecks food is very similar to Dekay's snakes, or small garter snakes, worms, slugs, etc. They do not eat in captivity as well as Dekay or garter, but in time they should eat (all mine eventually ate it just took longer) earthworms appear to be their favorite.
