Any thoughts on food supplements for smaller monitors?

AntonT Oct 19, 2003 04:47 PM

I use exclusively Rep-Cal calcium/vit. D3 powder, and have heard (from Terry, of Captive Born Reptiles of Cols, OH) that other supplements are not nearly as good. He actually has a display in the store with various supplements, labeled as "Killer Vitamins".
I was wondering what you folks use to dust the insect prey for your varanids, and if you can share any good or bad experiences.
Thanks.

Hi,

I have used RepCal, but also use the Miner-All powder - most monitor folks I have spoken to use the Miner-All. I have had good luck with both, and my monitors seem to be healthy and are reproducing, so that is really all I ask.

Just to note, I have spoken to several monitor keepers whom I respect and trust, and have produced babies, that do not use any mineral supplement or UVB lighting at all, and raise all monitors indoors. This raises the question of whether it is needed at all.

Most that I read says to use it, and I don't think that it can hurt (maybe it can, but I use it pretty sparingly - just twice a week or so).

Just my thoughts...

All the best,

Ive read an article where Minerall was the only reptile supplement that the manufacturer would allow their product to be tested by an independent lab for verification and quality of ingredients. They were tested also in an independant medical testing for health of the animal as well as trace elements etc.
I recently decided to try vit-all with my feeder insects, but minerall is the only one I use now, the results are amazing, you have to see the difference to believe it.

Thanks, I'll have to try it out...
BTW, how often do you dust the insects with it? I use it with every feeding, Since I've read a few articles (on the web and in Reptiles magazine) that there really is no way to overdose, since the content of vit. D3 is so low in the supplements.
