Sick baby mali, read on...

fruitionx Oct 19, 2003 05:16 PM

Ok i went to my local petsmart today and was passing by the lizard section. I always look in, normally they look 1/2 way decent. But today the leos were 1/2 dead, the thinnest tails you can imagine, and in the next tank there was a baby mali. I have NEVER seen a BABY Uro at a petsmart. It was housed on sand the big calci sand too, can you say impaction. Had about 20 crickets in with it, a 30 watt bulb and just sitting there with it's eyes closed. I was so upset by this. I called the aspca and they said they will go check it out. This little guy is only 2 inches long, if they take it and put it up for adoption i am willing to take it, but i really do not have the room at all. It is so tiny, even at first i didn't notice it. everyhtign was wrong with the picture. So to my question: Is there anyone in the Monmouth County, NJ area that would take it if i can save it? I cannot spend any money on vet bills for it, but it would be a free CB Mali. This is of course if i can save it. If you are interested please post. I do not want to ship this little guy. It looks like it definatly will be saveable however. It just has the wrong diet and conditions. If you are interested in coming to pick it up let me know ASAP i will go tomorrow and see. This is of course if i can save the little man. Let me know and i will get back to you guys tomorrow night. I would only be able to keep it for a few days also, so it would need to be picked up tuesday or wendnesday. Let me know if it is worth trying to save it or not, i just really do not have th space.

Poor baby.

I got Drake from Pet Smart and had to send my vet over there to teach them how to properly care for them and they have since changed the way they care for them in the store here. I will take him if we are close enough. I have a tank and everything already needed for another Uro. But the question is are we close enough to each other? A long trip right away may be to much stress on the animal. Let me know all the details and we will go from there.

UPDATE On the cat I was posting about in here. He is drinking and eating but it is very minimal. He is meowing again which is a good sign I think. But just to be on the safe side I am going to call my vet tomorrow and discuss his progress again. I may just be a little over protective and worring to much. I don't know but we may be making a trip to the vet tomorrow.

That is one small mali. My 10 week old mali hatchlings are already over 4 inches long and are all around 15 grams each. When they hatched they were about 2 inches long. Look under the hatchling's belly and look where the yolk sac would be. If it is red or there are no white scales, and looks like it is still healing then it is definatly under 3 weeks old. That hatchling couldn't be over 1 month old unless improper diet severly stunted its growth. Tell the pet store that they are not supose to sell the hatchling until they are a few months old or over 4-5 inches long. And i think that it is illegal to sell an animal without a care sheet. So if they are keeping the animal in those horrible conditions then there is no way they have a care sheet about it. Why would people try to sell animals when they have no clue about them. When customers ask them questions about husbandry of the animal usually they just tell you a hole bunch of BS because when i bought my uro they told me to treat it just like a beardie. I am not saying all pet stores are bad, but there are enough to give all of them a bad rap. I will probably work at a petstore when i turn 15 in a few months because i am tired of seeing sick dieing animals in tiny cages. So whenever i think they are mistreated an animal i will do research and fix the problem.

Ok first off I am way to far away to take him! Darn it! I am in Washington and I can't make any trips right now plus it would not be good for the Uro. Sorry I really wish we could take him right now because it might ease our pain some. I took our cat to the Emergency Vet tonight after he fell over. We lost him about two hours later when his heart stopped as they were working on him! My kids are a wreck and a new animal would help ease the pain. What kills me is he was gone for six months and the not knowing where he was allowed the kids to imagine he was happy and just with another family. And then to get him back and have him less than a week and have this happen is just terrible! I hope you find a happy home for that little guy I just wish we were closer and it could have been us! Good Luck!

I've read your posts before... Please do what you can for this lizard. Do you have a local Herpetelogical Society? They might be able to help. Do you know any other lizard keepers where you live? I wish I lived near you so I could take this little guy. It sounds promising... keep us posted.

p.s. - don't be afraid to tell Petco what they're doing wrong. Each store seems to operate differently, with some having real knowledgeable people working there, and other stores you just wish were shut down. Enough complaints to management about poor animal conditions will warrant a change... hopefully...

Talked to hubby and he said if he is well enough to ship him to do so. I can get a box from Doug Dix so he is shipped properly. Hubby thinks it would help the kids with the loss of the cat. Let me know!
