Injured Young Garter...Asking for Advice!...

mmfrankford Oct 19, 2003 05:59 PM

Hello! I'm from Columbus, Ohio and was at one of the metro parks today(If your from Columbus it was the Inniswood Metro Garden)Anyway I found a young garter snake near the trail.I caught it at first just to look at it when I noticed it has cuts and scratches on its body below it's vent and on the tail.
One cut has torn the skin and the flesh underneath had been exposed, but has now dried out and is hard to the touch. This is further down on the tail. Other than this it is squirminng around.Right now I have it in a temporary container but have a ten gallon aquarium available.I had thought of attempting to rehabilate and shelter it until it warms up in spring and then release it in a good habitat area. Or to take it to one of the nature centers, but I'm not sure they will care for it(Because garters are common) I would really like to give this little guy a chance.I have experience with corn snakes but would like to get some advice from those who raise garters. Thanks

Please keep in mind that this is only one person's opinion, but if you're planning on taking it in over the winter to let it heal, I'd just keep it as a pet. I'm not too keen on the release of long-term captives.

That being said, I think the snake has a good chance of survival as long as no internal organs were damaged. They're pretty resilient.

I've got a wandering garter that looks like it's been run over with a lawn mower--broken back, lacerated tail, etc. I've had it 8 years now.
