I don't think I've ever heard of a case of mites in a leopard gecko.
But it probably happens.
sorry to hear about your little leo passing

Im afraid the weight loss, thirst and not eating are also signs of impaction... Whatever the cause im very sorry to hear about your loss.

good to hear about your new baby leo, and also good to hear your keeping him on paper towels :-] good luck with him.

if niles was a baby and she was on sand - then there is a higher chance that it was impaction. congrats on the new baby and the paper towels idea i hear you can keep leos on sand as adults, but during the early stages you might want to stick to paper towels or slate. as for me, i've been sticking to the BROWN paper towels so it looks like an actual ground, rather than the white paper towels with designs on it hehee~ take care!

Plus, there'd have to be A LOT of them overtaking his body to cause anemia.

You would see little black bugs crawling on him.
They usually like to hang out around the eyes of an animal or dig in under the arms and legs in the folds of the skin. They usually have a few shedding problems too because of them.Or you'ld find some drowned in your leo's water bowl maybe.

I would think it was an impaction. Impacted geckos drink alot too. Just because you didn't see him eat the sand doesn't mean he didn't.Unless you kept a good eye on him all night and day. And if you've been monitoring him closely enough you would have seen the mites. An infestation bad enough to kill would have been noticable. In an older reptile manual it even says that mites are annoying, but rarely fatal.

I've never seen a leo with mites, but I'm sure it happens occasionally, but they're not the type on animal they like to frequent on. Usually you see them on animals with larger/thicker scales. Iguanas, pythons, Collared lizards... animals that they can find large overlapped scales to dig under.

thank u very much for all your imput i guess it wasnt mites. the thing that worried me the most besides not eating was i didnt see him shed the last month..i was curious about that. no sand of any kind for me from now on!!!!!

aw, i'm sorry to hear about your loss niles was a cute little leo. i'm also assuming it was impaction because of the weight loss and thirst. sometimes you don't have to see them eat sand for them to eat it. if he was fed crickets and some were in while you were gone, he could have gotten impacted trying to attack it - or if a mealie escaped and he ate it off the floor

but again, i'm sorry to hear for your loss~
