Help! Falling eggs? Something to be worried about?

Crested12 Oct 19, 2003 07:23 PM

I recently purchased a pair of red crested geckos to add to two females that i have. I have a 2*2*3 arboreal cage and they have been doing great. But i have got a problem.
I recently put a nest box into the cage with spagnum moss because i was seeing some signs of breeding behavior. (the females have small scratches on the top of their heads) And i have been checking the nest box for eggs for the past week or two. And yesterday morning i noticed a hole dug into the moss! I was sure i was gonna get eggs. this morning i checked again and there was anouther hole dug. But still no eggs. And when i came home from work i decided to check on all of my females to see how they are doing. I read somewhere that if you gently press on the belly of a female crested you could tell if she is gravid. I did this to my 3 females and didnt notice anything. So i put them back and decided to pull out the huge peice of corkboard i have in the cage so i could dig through the jungle mix on the bottom of the cage. And to my suprise an egg fell from the top of the cage! Now I cant tell if it is infertile or just dried up but it is definately dead. But how did it get there? did one of my girls lay it the night before in the foilage on the top of the cage? or did i do something wrong by feeling their stomachs? It wasn't wet or anything like she had just laid it, but why would she lay it in the top of the cage?
I searched through the rest of the cage, through all the leaves and the bedding abd i didn't find anouther one! Now this would be a first clutch, and i heard that they are sometimes infertile the first time, but is it normal to just lay one like that? And in the top of the cage? I am not sure which crested laid it but i have an idea. Please help me on this i am kinda worried about the little guys. Thanks a ton- Ben

Don't worry, your doing fine. Often when eggs are laid outside of a nestbox or other suitable area, they are infertile. If this is the first time the female has laid, there is chance that it was infertile. Just be patient, and the fertile eggs will come.
