Breeding my male panther, some questions on morphs.....

Justin M Oct 19, 2003 07:39 PM

I have a Picasso Panther chameleon and have had him for about 7 months and he is just amazing. I have alway kept reptiles and amphibians but have just recently taken interest in breeding. I have started a breeding program for my red eyed tree frogs and was thinking I would like to breed my chameleon. I am no looking to make any money on this...just enough for my time and expenses. I just want other people to be able to enjoy these awesome creatures. Anyways... the only person I have seen sell the "picasso" morph is Paul at captivepanther.com which will not load so I don't know if the site is down or what but I have not been able to contact him. I was wondering if anyone else knows where I can find a female "picasso" morph or if it matters on the morphs between breeding. For example if I were to obtain a female Ambanja or Tamatave. I dunno,...sorry for the long post, any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

You can breed him to any female panther you want. If the babies hatch then you are going to have crossed animals or "hybrids" which may or may not be less desirable than pure locale animals. However, if you don't want this happening you can purchase a female Ambilobe and breed her with your "picasso" and you will get pure animals. Why? Well, as much as some people want to say this is not true, the fact of the matter is that Ambilobe is the actual locale in Madagascar where the "picasso" and the "sirama" come from.

You should still be able to reach Paul through his email but if not, rest assured that you can breed your "picasso" male to any Ambilobe ( "picasso" or "sirama" ) female.

People have different views on whether panther morphs should be crossed. Some think that bloodlines should be kept as pure as possible (ie, no crossbreeding) while others don't mind so much. There can definately be some awesome animals made through crossbreeding, but then problems arrive when animals are later crossbred and sold as "purebred" as well as other problems with crossed bloodlines (ie what would happen if wc imports were ban and most morphs were crossed, etc.)
*I* think that is is ok to do as long as it is made clear to the buyer what crosses they are. I don't think I would breed more than two morphs together (ie male ambanja/nosey be cross bred to sambava female, and so on). Then there would just be mutted lines and not even a "crossbreed" really. If that makes sense, I'm tired.
You just have to look at both options, and decided what you think is right/acceptable. But, if you do decided to crossbreed for whatever reason PLEASE inform the buyers and make sure they know. Also, discuss with them possibilities for morphs if they breed, and the importance of THEIR (possible) future buyers knowing the morphs. There could very well be a great importance to knowing the exact bloodlines of our chams sometime in the not so distant future.. so if you do crossbreed try and do it in the most responsible way possible! (not that you wouln't anyway, just some food for thought - I'm sure there are many other's who would be fine with it and many dead set against it)
Good luck with finding a female picasso! They are GREAT animals! Is ambilobe the same as picasso? For some reason I think they might be... maybe I'm wrong. You should look into that, maybe more breeders have them listed as that (if they are the same)
Sorry this is so long, I'm over-tired and chatty

....and you should be able to reach me via email. But anyway, like Ivan said, Ambilobes and "Picasso" in my eyes are the same thing. My site is down, but I am working on a new one. I've started to venture into the whole "snake thing" now, but I still have quite a few babies coming up, still have to raise them up to be sure they are 100% Ambilobes though. My F2 Ambilobes should be hatching any day now. Those I am positive are 100% Ambilobe.
