Beardie's won't shed or eat

wollen Oct 19, 2003 10:43 PM

I've had one of my beardie's for about three months now. she was doing great..then stopped eating. I gave her some jump start to see if that would help and it did. But she's doing this again where she's not eating and getting smaller. She looks so tiny. About two weeks ago I bought another beardie..a big guy. They were both eating doing very well and now for the last two weeks neither of them will eat Crickets..veggie's..worms. I'm not sure what I should do. I've tried the warm bath as well as the jump start and nothing. Any advise would be great!! Thanks

First off, separate them. Second, take fecals from both to a vet. I suspect parasites could be causing your first one to turn off food..and when you brought in a new one, either she infected him or he was already infected and being with her, made it worse. Both should have been kept separated for a few months till the new one was clear of any infection, especially when your first one was already showing signs of ill health.

Also, more details about your setup (temps, substrate, what you feed etc) would make it easier to know what is the problem.

The temp on the heat lamp side is about 85-90 and the other w/the UV light is about 75-80. they are in a 50 gal reptile tank. I tried feeding them again today w/ mealworms and nothing.

Get the basking site up to around 105 (surface temp NOT air temp)
They are not eating because they are not digesting their food. Raise that temp and they should pick up in a day or so

The top where the heat lamp is the temp is 100 then I have another temp where the beardies lie and that temp is 85..should I change the heat lamp to a higher watt or is it ok? My small beardie hasn't grown at all since I bought her if anything she has gotten smaller. I gave them a warm bath last night for about 30 minutes and they ate a few crickets but again today they wouldn't eat anything. Should I keep giving them the jump start? Thanks for your advise

I would try to raise the temp a little more. Either raise the basking spot or lower the bulb. If that fails, I would go up in wattage. 105 - 110 should be good.

Does it mean anything when they dig holes in the sand and lay? I'mm try and raise the heat. And I'll try more crickets tomorrow. Do you think they might be sick?

Exactly as they are saying without leaving anything out. Skip only one of their suggestions and both of your beardies will most likely be dead soon. Good luck with your precious little guys.
