Feeding during hibernation?

boastud Oct 19, 2003 11:42 PM

Do you feed during hibernation? Do you turn off the heat source totally? My room they are in is about 68 degrees. I have talked to many people who do many diferent things. Any help out there?

I keep there temps the same....just slowly shorten the daylight hours to 10....in nature everything doesn't just stop....the day just shortens...of course it does cool....but I find no need to change bulbs and temps as it doesn't seem to effect their brumation though I have done it before to see....

I offer greens everyday....and if I see them out....I soak them and offer a few bugs.....

I did not change a thing but cut the daylight time back two hours and that was it they went straight into brumation. I did not plan to do it this early. I actually thought it would take more like a pretty significant temp change over a month or so, and a lot of time cut down too like 7 hours daily with just the uvb bulbs on, and no added heat. That was not the case at all. I just cut the timer back 1 hour one week, then two weeks later cut it back to one and a half then two weeks cut it down to two hours off and they are already brumating. They poke their heads out once a week or so and I water them give vitamins/ cal and offer greens other then that they are sleeping. Took them out last week just to make sure stool samples were clean, and yes just a natural brumation period for both females in the same cage. Two hours and cooler night temps is all it took. I'm sure some dragons might need more of a change, but for these two females, and one of my males that was all that was needed. I did cut it back 3 hours since they are down anyway I figured I'd save on electric. I know breeders as well that shut things down totally, and actually cover the cages. This is also a large full year breeder so I guess when it's time to cycle them they have too or it screws his plans. I only intend to breed once a season for my guys so one brumation should spark the love around here. I hope anyway.
