Brumation ?'s Re: Feeding

Spankenstyne Oct 20, 2003 12:52 AM

Ok i seem to have a grip on the whole Brumation thing for my Mali.I have a few questions though that haven't been answered really very clearly enough for me looking through the old posts.I'm new to the brumation thing, i have lots of experience with herps just never had any reason to brumate anything before so i'd like to be as prepared as possible

Here's what i'm doing and where i'm at based on all the info from various sources:

I'm dropping the daytime light hours by a couple every week for a few weeks, lowering the temps a little bit on the undertank supplemental heat until it's eventually just off and just ambient room temperature is where we're at for most of the day.Basically my plan is to drop the daylight hours for 3 weeks until finally it'll be a couple months of only 2-3 hours of light/heat a day.

I understand that in theory his appetite should start to wane on it's own? When should i be looking at not feeding? I plan on keeping his bowl of seeds/lentils in there for the odd snack for the duration. As i understand it, they will once in a while bask a bit for an hour or so and maybe have a small nibble since they don't actually hibernate? I want to make sure that his gut is pretty much empty correct so that nothing goes necrotic on him while his systems are running much slower?

Any info and your experiences would be most helpful.

Thanks,

Spanky

Sounds fine to me.
Some people give their Animals a warm bath before hibernation to empty their intestine-but who does this in the wild.
With exception of the 6-8 weeks in the fridge, my Uros do have access to dry food all the time and I even (YES) offer a small water bowl.
They do not eat much, but at least my male nips a bit here and then.
