newt nutrition

abbyn Oct 20, 2003 12:57 AM

i feed my newts earthworms because that seems to be the only thing one of the two will eat. but i'm concerned that they may not get enough nutrients this way. i know that for lizards people shake crickets in a nutrient powder before feeding.

is there anything i can do to make sure they have all their nutrients?

thanks!

Yes - give them as varied a diet as possible. See:

Varying their diet is not a bad idea. But if they will only eat worms, that's probably the best food for them to be stuck on! You can put the worms into soil containing calcium carbonate (Calci-sand) and increase their calcium content somewhat. But I find this shortens the lifespan of the worms. If they eat above water, you can dust the worm bits the same way you would with crickets. An occasional serving of raw liver will give them some different nutrients.

one of them (my newest one, which i haven't decided yet if it's a japanese or chinese firebelly) will eat just about anything. pretty agressive eater, i drop food in front of him and he's all over it.

my smaller newt, one i've had about 6 months, will only eat worms. i can't even drop them in front of him, i have to hold the food in tweezers. strange little newt.....

i will try to get some of that calcium sand next time i'm at the petstore. thanks!
