Yelling

leobeginner Oct 20, 2003 09:01 AM

Hey,

I'm proud to announce the arrival of my first Leopard (actually, my first lizard of any kind). She's a two month old. (we'll find out for sure if she's a 'she' for sure soon enough) Her parents were a Normal and a High-Yellow/Patternless.

Anyway, on he first night with me I noticed something weird. Do leopards often scream? A few hours after I introduced her into her new habitat I was napping and she woke me up with a loud gecko yell. Do they do that often? She was out exploring in the darkness, so I was happy about that, but does the scream mean anything? I'm hungry? I'm scared? I'm just yelling to see if there are any other geckos hanging out around my new home? (there aren't)

She didn't look upset, just curious. She wasn't doing anything like shaking her tail or anything either. She was just kind of standing on top of the highest rock in there looking towards me napping and yelling at me.

I was actually kind of happy she woke me because she got me up just in time for a Family Guy rerun. Maybe she's a fan...

Or maybe she just wanted me to turn the tv off (I fell asleep with it on low volume, but she couldn't see it from where she was)

Anyway, just thought it was weird. I'd never heard of them doing that before.

Blaine

Some juvi leos are more demonstrative than others. SHe probably just was startled by something and decided to scream.

I've had some babies that - I swear - if you were to softly fart 30 feet away - they would scream like their getting attacked. Pretty funny . . .

I've heard quite a few soft little farts from inside the enclosure when someone in there was making a poopie.

first off, i wanted to congratulate you on your 1st leo i'm also on my 1st one... and through all the research i've done for the past few months and having my leo for about 1 month... i've never heard of leos screaming unless they were trying to warn you away from them so they don't drop their tail... now i'm interested in seeing your leo and actually hearing her scream !! my leo doesn't make any sounds at all... the guy i got him from said he hissed once as a baby because he didn't want to be picked up - but that was about it.... i'm gonna be checking up on your posts coz now i'm intrigued and curious do you have a pic of your new leo?

take care!

No pics yet. Got some off with my 'regular' camera this morning before she retreated into her cool hide and curled up into a little ball for a nap. But I'm a long way from finishing off the roll (although I'm sure most of it will be used up on her).

I'll try to get her on my webcam if she'll pose. Don't want to take her out for a photoshoot yet, but in a few days, if she'll accept it, I'll get some shots.

The yell was weird. It was very velociraptor like. Thought I was watching Jurassic Park. I guess she was just proclaiming herself queen of the aquarium...

Gotta love it when your pet shows personality on the first night though.

Hopefully she won't make a habit of being so vocal. Otherwise she'll find herself out in the hall pretty quickly.

Many babies will scream. I recorded some screams from hatchlings a few years ago, spliced them together and put it online for everyone to enjoy. You can download it here.

I don't have speakers at work, but I'll give that a listen when I get home. It's probably best I don't have speakers at work, otherwise there'd be some serious concerns about what was going on in my cubicle with geckos screaming...

That is Great Rob ha ha ha. I got a lot of laughter out of that. I'm gonna have to let my wife listen. lol

Except he's full-grown. He stands on top of his half-log and just screams. I think he does it more often than I realize, maybe even every night. I think it's just his battle cry to establish his territory. Fortunately, the only other leos I keep in the room are female, so they could care less. I'm sure if I kept my other males, they might react differently.

Here's a picture of him. The first time I ever heard him scream was after I had to give him a soak to remove some skin on his toe that didn't come off in his shed. But even before that, he was somewhat vocal. He'd bark at the crickets. lol

I guess my little girl (or possibly guy, she was incubated female, but I can't confirm the sex yet), just wants to feel like a big lizard. I couldn't believe something that's only a few inches long could be so loud! She managed to wake up over the volume of the tv!!

Definitely makes you wonder about what goes on in their little heads though. Maybe she was a raptor in a past life...

Yeah, I've been awakened a couple of times in the middle of the night. I don't see it as a nuisance though. I feel pretty lucky to have a leo that talks. Geckos got their name because of the sounds they make.

When I took my juvie to the vet, he screamed when the vet tech took him out of his deli cup. It sounded like the baby raptor in Jurrassic Park that had just hatched out of its egg at the lab. I guess he kind of looks like a baby raptor, too. Here's a pic of him:
