beardies acting wierd

delphiclik Oct 20, 2003 09:32 AM

I know this is an abused post topic but now its happening to me . so i have a male and female beardie in a HUGE tank they are both around 2 years old and live together all year round, funny thing is they have never mated or even showed any signs, maybe hes not cute enough. The male is always a lazy bum but my female just started acting very tired, she sometimes wedges herself in between the wall and her breeding box(in case they ever do mate i wanna be ready for it), she hasn't barely been eating (was a ravenous eater previously), and used to have coccidia. need any more info?

Could be a few things. First off I would send a fecal to the vet to make sure coccidia or other parasites haven't started up. Since you mentioned she was treated recently, did you give her a probiotic after the treatments? Her lack of eating and listfulness could be due to an imbalance in her gut since the coccidia treatments would have killed off alot of beneficial gut flora as well. Doing a search on 'probiotics' in the forum here should bring up threads listing names of common products used for reptiles, drawing a mental blank right on what the common one used here is called.

Though your dragon's haven't mated yet I would still recommend giving them their own cage. The male could be stressing her out, hence why she had coccidia flare up before. Also, never good to leave a lay box in there all the time as they quickly dry out. The soil should remain moist and easy to pack, so when the female does dig a tunnel it won't collapse on her. Also, are you really ready for the cost, care and responsibility of 60-100 or more baby beardies?

What are the basking temperatures in the tank? How long is the lighting on? Hiding under her log etc may be a sign she is getting ready to burmate. However before I would let her do that, I would take the steps mentioned above first.

well actually she had the coccidia a LONG time ago, about 6 months later i got the male, he was a adopted from a VERY reputable pet store(he was in a fight with another male and lost toes and part of his face, anyway), They have been in the cage together for about a year now with absolutly NO problems, they sleep on each other, they get along real good (at least it seems that way). You know i thought that about the box but the male really likes to sleep in it so i left it in there. Temps are around 100-105 at tip of the basking log, they rarely stay there, they are in the ~95 range. Well the lighting is kinda irregular, it is on a switch and my dad turns it on in the morning and i turn it off at night, i don't know why i don't just get a $6 timer. I'm not too worried about them mating, but i am prepared. I have really been slacking in getting them some veggies for a while, maybe i'll give that a try. I also have mercury vapor UV light.
