switching from crickets to mealworms...

SittonJ Oct 20, 2003 10:06 AM

I finally got my new year old gecko to eat something. I was trying to feed her mealworms because I've read better things about them and they are just easier for me to keep but she didn't eat any of them. Then I tried puting some of the crickets in a can in there (I didn't have time to go and find live ones) and she ate one right away. I know the breeder I got her from was feeding crickets so this is the food she is used to. Ideally I would like to switch her from crickets to mealworms but I've only had her 1 week and I'm not sure how to go about the change cause I want her to keep eating. Any suggestions? Do you think that she will eventually come to eat the mealworms? Should I offer crickets and mealies together every meal at the same time?

That's great you got her eating though... Wasn't it you who said before that your gecko was completely lethargic? Probably it was stress... I bet if you got her some live crickets, she'd get all fired up... And then you can get her on mealworms later when she's over her relocation stress.

Yes it was me who said she was lethargic - and she still is a little. But I think those few crickets gave her a boost. She is looking mighty grey and pale and is spending all her time in her humid box. I'm thinking this is time for her to shed? How long does the shedding process take? Is it a week like it is for snakes? I'm glad she finally ate a little something too

I have recently switched all my leos from crickets to mealworms. They were a little hesitant at first but they warmed up to the idea of easy prey. The youngest ones are the hardest to get to switch because they really like to chase their food. Shedding only takes a night once the skin begins to fall off. You dont have to worry about cleaning it out either, they eat the skin as a source of nutrition
